A father shot and killed eleven people, including his eight-year-old son and his ex-wife New Year's Eve slaughter.

Sidnei Araujo, 46, broke into a family celebration in Campinas, a town near Sao Paulo, Brazil, and killed a gun.

He killed eleven people, including his ex-wife Isamara Filier, with whom he was locked up in a bitter guard battle and his son João Victor before returning the weapon.

A man was wounded in the leg, but survived pretending to be dead, his sister said.

A teenager who was also at the party said to the television station O Globo: "At first I thought it was nothing, so I realized that I had heard it blows, I hid in the Bathroom, tried to break the door, but I could not. "

Police found a 9mm pistol, a pocket knife and explosives in the body of Araujo. The other victims, who were all adults, including Isamara brother, Rafael, 33.

Liliane Ferreira, who hosted the party, was killed with five of her parents.

Her husband was injured and remains in hospital.

Araujo left an audio message on his cell phone apologies and blamed his ex-wife.

He was a government scientist at the National Center for Energy and Materials Research and had studied at prestigious universities.

Friends were surprised by his actions.
