Minister of State of Aviation, Hadi Sirika Sen said that Azikiwe Airport Nnamdi International (NAIA), Abuja, will be closed for six weeks in February and March 2017 for the total repairs on the runway.
Sirika told reporters in Abuja on Monday that the closure was to allow Julius Berger to carry out the total reconstruction of the airport severely damaged the runway.
He said that, although the runway would be used during the six months of rehabilitation, allow six weeks to rebuild the middle part of the runway.
According to him, President Muhammadu Buhari approved reconstruction by emergency procurement procedure for the work to begin. This, he believes, is due to the centrality, economy and importance of Abuja to the general administration of the country.
He said the government could not afford the closure airport Abuja long as palliative repairs were being carried out on the runway over the past three months. "From start to finish, it will take six months.
However, we will use the track almost throughout the period except for about six weeks when the track is closed.
"It's when we're going to do in the middle of the track." The government accepted the design made by the contractor. The track lasts more than 10 years after the end of next year, "he said.
Sirika said that Abuja passengers to destinations all over the world use the Kaduna airport as an alternative during the six-week passenger shutdown. He said the deal had been supplemented by the state of Kaduna, adding that if the federal government will offer buses to transport passengers to Abuja, the state government will provide security.
According to him, it will cost the government a substantial amount of money ", but we believe that the palliative approach is wrong because three years later will make the same repairs.
"So we decided to go for the bigger option is to do structural repairs if the track will take about six months to complete," he said.
Bilateral agreement on Air with other countries, Sirika said that the government had signed BASA with 18 countries that Nigerians frequently visit and do business. MoU, he said, would give Nigeria the opportunity to operate air services in 18 countries.
"With this, we are free to fly and land safely in another airspace and this will help us open up our market."
